John Hunter and the book of Tut

John Hunter and the Book of Tut review

If you have played Book of Ra or Book of Dead, you already know how this works: one symbol acts as both wild and scatter, and free spins come with a randomly chosen expanding symbol. Pragmatic does not change the formula. It gives it a sharper look and a slightly higher RTP.

Symbols

John Hunter himself is the top symbol and pays 500x your stake for five on a line. He is followed by the pharaoh (200x) and the cat and scarab statues (75x each). The low pays are card royals. The Book of Tut is the wild and scatter, and pays 2x, 20x or 200x your stake for 3, 4 or 5 anywhere on the screen.

Free spins with an expanding symbol

3 or more books anywhere award 10 free spins. Before they start, one regular symbol is chosen at random as the special expanding symbol. During the free spins, whenever that symbol lands in enough positions to win, it expands to fill whole reels and pays on all 10 lines. The reels do not have to be next to each other. Three books during the feature award another 10 spins, with no limit on retriggers.

Everything depends on which symbol is chosen. An expanding John Hunter can produce the top wins, while an expanding 10 usually means a modest round.

Volatility and max win

Pragmatic rates the game as high volatility. Pragmatic lists the maximum win as 5,500x (some sources give 5,000x for a full screen of John Hunter symbols, with the higher figure including the scatter pay). There is no jackpot and no gamble feature.

How to play

• Set your stake (from 0.10 to 100 per spin at most casinos). All 10 paylines are always active.
• Line wins pay left to right. The Book of Tut substitutes for every symbol and also pays as a scatter.
• 3 or more books trigger 10 free spins with a random expanding symbol.
• The expanding symbol pays on all lines even when it is not on adjacent reels.

John Hunter and the Book of Tut RTP

Pros and cons

What we like

• Proven “Book of” formula that is easy to learn
• Expanding symbol pays on non-adjacent reels
• Unlimited free spins retriggers
• Low 0.10 minimum bet

What could be better

• Very little that is new compared with older “Book of” slots
• High volatility, and the free spins depend heavily on which symbol is chosen
• A 94.50% RTP version exists

Our verdict

John Hunter and the Book of Tut is a solid, faithful “Book of” slot with no surprises. If you like the genre, it is worth playing alongside Book of Dead and Legacy of Dead. If you are looking for something new, it does not offer much.
