Book of Oz Slot Review
Our Book of Oz slot machine review is the best place to begin your journey along the Yellow Brick Road. Once you’ve read up on all the amazing features available, you’ll be ready to rally the troops and march off into the sunset for the adventure of a lifetime – with some mighty cash rewards if you survive everything that’s put in your path.
Book of Oz Theme
As you’d expect, there’s a lot of green colouring used in this game, but everything’s very carefully designed and kept tasteful. The reels are set within the Emerald City itself, home – of course – to the fabled wizard, who despite being something of a showman ultimately came up with the goods for Dorothy and her friends.
You won’t find any of the main characters on the reels, aside from the wizard himself. Other items used for high and medium paying symbols are a courage potion, some kind of red elixir, and a purple concoction, along with the book mentioned in the title. Playing card values are used for the lower paying symbols, however they’ve been designed to really fit in with the theme.
Betting Options
The most that can be bet per spin at this slot is just $0.10, which is a lower minimum bet than you’ll find at many other slots. The maximum bet is only $25 per spin though, which isn’t going to be high enough for the biggest spenders. It might sound obvious to some, but we’ll say it anyway: the more money you bet, the more money you could find yourself winning.
The bet level control isn’t prominently marked here, but it can be found at the very bottom of the reels, simply marked ‘Bet’. Click here and you can set coin values from $0.01 to $2 and choose from 1 to 5 coins per spin. If you know you want to place the biggest bet possible, simply click the “Max Bet” button.
Bonus Features
Given its title you could be forgiven for thinking this game has features similar to the famous Book of Ra slot, but it’s a rather more complex affair than that. It does, though, use a book symbol, which in this case acts as a scatter feature. Land 3, 4 or 5 of them anywhere on the reels and you’ll trigger 10, 12 or 25 free spins, respectively. These come with extra help, in the form of an expanding symbol bearing the image of the wizard himself. He’ll appear randomly, expanding where necessary if he can generate a win for you by doing so.
You’ll also find that the book has another function, as it also acts as the game’s wild symbol. This means that it can substitute for all other symbols on the reels, helping you to create winning combinations.
However, the main event in this game comes with every single spin. At the bottom of each reel is a clearly marked respin value, showing you how much you’ll need to pay if you want to spin any one particular reel again. If you’re just one symbol away from a spectacular win then you can opt to spin that one reel if you wish – whilst keeping the remaining reels in place. Obviously, you’ll need to balance the cost of the respin against the amount you could win, but that makes for a great strategic challenge. We found a handful of other Microgaming slots that offered this when researching our Book of Oz review, but it’s not something that’s generally offered.
Book of Oz Maximum Win
If you select the $100 max bet option when playing the Book of Oz slot, there’s a top win of $50,000 on offer, which you’ll claim when you manage to line up 5 wizards on one of the 25 paylines. You’ll then have enough cash to buy an emerald of your own – or invest in some genuine ruby slippers if you prefer.
Is Book of Oz Worth Playing and Who Should Play It?
As with pretty much every slot ever released by Microgaming, Book of Oz is a slot that’s definitely worth playing. The overall gameplay is enjoyable, while the respin feature marks it out from most other slots out there. The prizes are another reason to play, as is the return-to-player, which is higher than the average slot offers.
If you loved the movie, you’ll enjoy the theming used here, and anyone will appreciate the lengths Microgaming have gone to with the visuals and sound. However, Book of Oz is a serious players’ game thanks to its optional respins and is clearly aimed at more experienced players looking to devise a strategy and take on a true slots challenge.
