Top Cat Slot Review
We did have to tear ourselves away from watching old DVDs of the original TV show in order to write our Top Cat slot machine review, but we managed it eventually. A quick read through will get you kitted out with all the information you need to know, so you should be scoring the odd win here and there before you know it – and that’s what life on the street is all about…
Top Cat Theme
As you’d expect, the reels are set in a familiar-looking alleyway on the Lower East Side, with some skyscrapers in the background and the famous dustbin to one side. You’ll find each spin accompanied by the tapping of cymbals – or perhaps they’re dustbin lids? – while every win is celebrated by a blast of trumpets.
The higher value symbols bear different gang members, including Top Cat himself, with traditional poker symbols used for the lower-payouts. For once, though, these poker symbols seem utterly appropriate as TC and his gang were very much the type to indulge in the odd card game, living on the streets and doing whatever it took to survive.
Betting Options
This game wouldn’t be true to the spirit of the original show if it was too expensive to join in the fun; Top Cat was a highly competent and notorious cheapskate after all, and you can follow his example with a $0.20 minimum bet if you like. However, if you want to win enough to live large and enjoy some much-deserved luxury, then you’ll need to bet more – and you can stake up to $500 per spin if you like.
To make your selection, just use the up and down arrows above and below the Bet icon, situated to the left of the reels. Alternatively, click the bet amount and you’ll then be able to select from the different available bets. The paylines at this slot are fixed, therefore you can’t change their number in order to change your bet size.
Bonus Features
The wild symbol is a fishbone – a meal eaten by TC and the others on a regular basis. As well as substituting for all other symbols, the fishbone is the key to starting the fantastic Master Plan Bonus feature. Just get a fishbone on reels one, three and five at the same time and this bonus will start.
The Top Cat Cash Picker Bonus feature is a little simpler: You’ll play a ‘pick me’ round, attempting to find Officer Dibble in a rubbish bin – who will then award you a multiplier.
The Maharaja Heist feature is reminiscent of the much-loved trail bonus features seen on pub fruit games. This one has 2 trails, taking you to a big money board.
In the Construction Site Wilds feature you’ll collect Top Cat Stickers, which are placed above the reels. Additional stickers mean extra free spins and extra wilds.
Trigger the Diner Free Spins feature and you’ll be awarded unlimited free spins, played out on a new set of reels that can win you multipliers and free spins.
In addition, most of the main characters get their own feature too with Dibble, Benny, Choo Choo, Brain and Spook offering you all manner of bonuses, which can be activated randomly at any point.
Choo’s Piano Wilds will see several wild symbols added to the reels, while Benny’s Colossal TVs will see multiple TV symbols placed on the reels, all of which will transform into the same symbol. Brain’s Water Wilds see Brain releasing a fire hydrant under each reel, and this can see reels turning completely wild. Finally, Spook’s Mice is Nice sees mice rearrange the symbols to create one or more winning combinations. We found that all random features activated pretty regularly as we played this game while researching our Top Cat review.
You’ll also find a feature called Fancy-Fancy’s Hot Dog Respins. This is triggered by landing a large hot dog wild symbol completely covering the fifth reel. At this point, a fast food vendor will cover the whole of that reel with his hot dog cart. Top Cat and his gang will then turn up with a fishing rod, pulling stacks of wilds one column to the left on every respin, before the wild falls off the left of the reels.
If all the above isn’t making your head spin, there’s also a progressive jackpot on offer at this slot. Land five Jackpot King overlay symbols on the reels and you’ll get some spins on a second set of reels. Collect 15 crown symbols and you’ll be given the chance to spin a wheel of fortune, which can see you winning one of three progressive jackpots.
Top Cat Maximum Win
A top standard payline win during the base game is worth 500x your bet per payline in this game – so that’s $12,500 when playing at the highest stakes. This is won when you manage to get five wild symbols on a payline. The progressive jackpot – like any other – is uncapped, therefore meaning it can be worth an unlimited amount.
Is Top Cat Worth Playing and Who Should Play It?
Even if you only play this game for old time’s sake it’s worth a look, though so much effort has gone into stuffing it full of what seems like an endless set of features that it’s impossible to ignore, no matter when you were born. The fact that this slot features a progressive jackpot also makes it definitely worth playing.
If you’ve never played an online slot in your life you might want to work up to this game, as it’s highly complex, but you won’t regret opening it up once you’re ready. It’s also worth playing if you’re looking for a slot with a medium volatility. We’d advise that you head elsewhere if you like games with high RTPs however, as the RTP of the Top Cat slot is well below average.
